Question: How did you get started with bodybuilding and weight training?
Back in 1996, my dad took me to the Arnold Classic. At the time he was working for Ostrim, a health and nutrition company. Even thought I was only 12 years old at the time, I immediately fell in love with bodybuilding after spending the weekend at the expo with my dad. I also started working out in the gym right around that time. I used bodybuilding as an escape from the stresses of adolescence, but mainly to improve my performance on the football field. I ended up playing football in college at the University of Tennessee as a defensive back (cb) from 2002-2006. All throughout my career I always did bodybuilding on the side, obsessed with the magazines and supplements, doing what I could to achieve the physique of my dreams. After college football is when I got into competing, and it has been love ever since.
Question: Where does your motivation come from?
I’m wired a bit differently than most. My motivation comes from the inside, and I have a hard time explaining to somehow I do what I do. Since I started bodybuilding at 12 years old, I literally have not taken off more than 5 days in a row. It’s just the way I am. If I had to pick my motivation source other than my internal wiring, I would choose my father, Frank Catanzano, who taught me everything I know and got me into this sport from the beginning.
Question: What workout routine has worked best for you?
This is a tough answer. As a full time fitness coach, my job is to write workouts. What I can tell you is I will just about never do the same exact workout twice. I generally train for hypertrophy- 4-6 sets- 6-12 reps – 15-25 sets total. No need to be in the gym for over 90 mins.
Question: If you had to pick only three exercises, what would they be?
Squat, deadlift, and bench duh!! 🙂
Question: When trying to cut down, do you prefer HIIT or just normal cardio?
I prefer HIIT due to my bodies response but either is fine. I do a mixture.
Question: What is your diet like and what does a sample day look like?
Competitor clean in season, very clean and organic year round.
- 6 meals: proteins – grilled chicken/ground turkey/salmon/whole eggs/egg whites
- Carbs: whole grain pasta, rice, egg noodles, potatoes
- Veggies: all of them
- Fats: macadamia oil, sesame oil, almonds, nut butters
Question: What is your supplementation like?
BCAAs intra/post workout, krill oil, super greens, maybe pre-workout some days, collagen/cartilage/glucosamine, probiotics, and a multi vitamin.

Nike Romaleos 2, resistance bands, lacrosse ball, knee wraps, wrist wraps, water jug, occlusion training tourniquets, towel, baby wipes, baby powder, ammonia smelling salts for heavy ass lifts.
